Cinco de Mayo Tablescape 2021

First comes Derby, then comes Cinco! We're jumping straight from mint julips to margaritas and this tequila-loving gal is here for it. Earlier this spring, the lovely Cristin Cooper and I did several tabletop shoots to provide inspiration for Easter, baby showers, and more, and it's finally time to share our take on a Cinco de Mayo vignette. While we designed this with 5/5 in mind, the colorway, tabletop accessories, and details are really perfect for any type of warm-weather entertaining. Who doesn't love a rattan accent and a fabulous terracotta plate?? This table is just dreamy, so let's whip up a Spicy Skinny Margarita (more on that below!), grab the guac, and dive right in.
The entire table was inspired by these gorgeous, lilac pieces by Pomelo Casa. We found them on The Avenue, one of my favorite resources for clothes, accessories, and home/tabletop pieces. I’m going through a bit of a purple phase (see: Easter, Mother’s Day) and have really enjoyed playing around with all the different shades in that color family. This lilac is just so pretty and unexpected for dishware that I fell in love. The salad plates, bowls, and pitcher became the basis for our design and we went from there (they come in lots of other colors, too – see the full collection here).
For the rest of the table we hunted in our respective cupboards and pulled out some go-to pieces. The otomi tablecloth and napkins are Frances Valentine – they gifted me these last summer (remember this?) and they remain a steadfast favorite. The combination of yellow and purple is fresh, festive, and elegant; a streamlined palette helps keep the spotlight on all of the pretty details. My favorite little "extra" is the pincushion protea tucked into each napkin. (Pro tip: adding a pretty flower to each place setting is a small detail that makes a big impact. Look for sturdy blooms that can last out of water.) Longtime readers will recognize several other repeats: I use my Frances Valentine rattan chargers, Juliska bamboo flatware, and Amanda Lindroth vases on loop (here’s proof). If you’re new, you’ll quickly learn that my favorite mantra (other than “delegate”) is “reuse, reuse, reuse!” Buy fabulous basics that you can use in a million different ways. It’s as true for tabletop as it is for clothes.
We did the flowers ourselves and used a combination of blooms in similar shades of purple. Notice the three vases – always style accent pieces in odd numbers (visually it looks cleaner). We kept it budget-friendly with mums, daisies, and some “filler” stems for height and texture. The purple roses are a bit of a splurge and this brings me to a great pointer: for a luxe look that’s still affordable, get one bunch of a special, pricier flower and add them to the outside of each arrangement. It elevates everything and you don’t break the bank.
It is Cinco de Mayo, which means a fabulous margarita is a must! I’m working with 21 Seeds this season (paid partnership), and they have a fantastic recipe for the easiest cocktail ever: a Spicy Skinny Margarita made with just three ingredients (this is literally the only kind of “cooking” I ever want to do). 21 Seeds is a female-owned tequila brand and their partner distillery in Mexico is similarly owned and predominantly staffed by women. They offer three delicious fruit-infused tequilas made with all-natural ingredients (I'm also obsessed with the pretty bottles). For Valentine’s Day we shared recipes that feature the Valencia Orange flavor, and today's Spicy Skinny Margarita calls for Cucumber Jalapeño. Here’s the recipe:
Spicy Skinny Margarita
2 oz Cucumber Jalapeño Tequila
1/2 oz fresh lime juice
1/2 oz simple syrup
Place all ingredients into shaker with 1.5 cups of ice. Shake 30 seconds (totally underrated and makes the cocktail); pour into a glass. Garnish with a lime and/or cucumber slice and serve. Optional: add club soda to make it a margarita spritz.
